4 August 2014100th anniversary of the German invasion of Belgium

Liège hosted the ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the German invasion of Belgium. In total, 33 foreign delegations and 17 heads of state took part in this event. The ceremony was held in four places: the Saint-Laurent Abbey, the Inter-Allied Memorial, the Palace of the Prince-Bishops and the town hall. To ensure security during this event, 650 policemen of the local and federal police were deployed.

On the same day, another ceremony was held at the military cemetery of Saint-Symphorien in Mons. This city was the scene of the first engagement between the British and German armies. The German President Joachim Gauck, the British Prime Minister David Cameron, the Belgian Royal family, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as well as Prince Harry attended this event. Their protection was ensured by 400 policemen.

The Directorate of Air Support provides assistance during those events by flying more than 24 hours with three MD902 helicopters.
