The police warn the public against a new type of fraud.

Victims, who are often single women older than 55 years, receive harassing phone calls from abroad. After the harassment has stopped, an alleged judge or lawyer calls the victim and tells her that legal proceedings, instituted by the Belgian State, have been won for the benefit of several victims of the same offence. This would give her right to a substantial financial compensation.

The actual fraud consists in persuading victims to purchase paysafecards (prepaid cards) amounting to hundreds of euros and to activate them with their bank codes. That money would then be used to pay for the costs.
